CHAPTER 13
âWhere did you put it?â Mae walked around the room divider, her curly honey-blond hair sticking out all over the place.
âPut what?â I asked, looking back with my laptop in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other.
When Darren and I finally placed the wood structure that looked like a mirror ball in front of Cup of Cheer, it was too late to go to the office to write up todayâs New Yearâs festivities.
The very idea of someone seeing us made my nerves so electric and hyped up that when I got home, I shouldâve fallen in my bed from mental exhaustion, but I was wide-awake.
Instead of forcing myself to lie there and think about the schedule of events Louise had asked me to post, I got up and logged in from home, where I was able to write up a quick time, place, and event.
âHold on,â I said to Mae. âGrab yourself a cup of coffee, and Iâll finish writing this up.â
Not that I didnât do my job last night. I just didnât give the normal detailed description the readers of the Junction Journal were accustomed to.
âNo harm, no foul,â I said as I finished typing up all the eventsâ descriptions in detail so when someone did click on the Journalâs list of holiday events, theyâd be able to see what each one was about.
I sighed, shut the laptop, and placed it on the side table as I curled my legs up underneath me so I could give Mae all my attention.
âSo?â She eased down on the couch with her full cup of coffee.
âI think we should definitely go to Resting Grinch Face.â I put the cup up to my lips and took a sip. âOh, yeah. I forgot you had no idea what that was. Iâve not seen it, either, but I hear itâs a really great time.â I put my free hand on my chest. âItâs an event with improv, stand-up, and sketch comedy, paired with huge prize money. Kinda like the mini-village.â
âIâm talking about the Merry Maker.â Mae wasnât going to drop it.
âIâd rather not talk about it. The less I talk or think about it, the less of a chance the secret will get out.â I got up and walked over to the coffeepot.
âWho on earth will I tell?â Mae sounded a little put off. âFine.â
I guessed my silence had told her to move on to a different topic.
âOr were you and Darren sneaking out for a midnight stroll?â Dang, she wasnât going to let it go. âI think we can talk about it. I flew out all this way to spend time with you, unlike the way Iâd spend most of my time when you lived in Normalâgetting away from you.â
I nearly spat my coffee out of my mouth.
âI knew it. But hearing you admit it really cracks me up.â I shouldâve been offended by what sheâd said, but I wasnât. I knew I wanted the scoop from her, and I was going to do everything my little journalist body could do to get the story.
